I just love nice and ripe fresh pineapple. It's such a sweet fruit, but at the same time, can be a little sour as well. But what does the pineapple has in store for us when it comes to nutritional value ?
The pineapple fruit has vitamins, minerals, fiber and enzymes that is good for the digestive system and helps in maintaining ideal weight and balanced nutrition. Pineapple is loaded with vitamin C, B1 and smaller amounts of B2, B3, B5 and B6. It is also an excellent source of manganese, copper, magnesium, potassium, beta-carotene, folic acid, and dietary fiber.Pineapple has minimal fat and sodium with no-cholesterol. Delicious, healthy and nutritious.
Pineapple contains micro-nutrients that experts believe protects against cancer and this micro-nutrients also break up blood clots and is beneficial to the heart. The ripe pineapple has diuretic properties. Pineapple juices also kills intestinal worms. It also relieves intestinal disorders and soothes the bile. Pineapple juice contains chemicals that stimulates the kidneys and aids in removing toxic elements in the body.
Pineapple contains a mixture of enzymes called bromelain. Bromelain blocks the production of kinins that form when there is inflammation. Test have shown that this blocking property of Bromelain in pineapple helps reduce swelling brought about by arthritis, gout, sore throat and acute sinusitis. This also helps accelerate the healing of wounds due to injury or surgery. To maximize bromelain's anti-inflammatory effects, pineapple should be eaten alone between meals or its enzymes will be used up digesting food.
Few hours before you plan to eat the pineapple, cut off the crown and then turn the fruit upside down on a plate and leave in the fridge. The sweetness of the juice which is at the bottom of the pineapple will be nicely distributed throughout the entire fruit when turned over!
To keep your cut pineapple, store it in an airtight container and soak it in its own juice. It will keep for up to one week in the fridge, and will retain its taste and juiciness.
One slice of pineapple (approx 100g) contains 52kcal. So try and never eat more than 2 slices, no matter how tasty it is for a healthy and yummie snack.
If you can't find any fresh pineapple, beware of the tins, as most are full of added sugar.
