It's that time of the year again. We're early December, office parties, friends parties, and family lunches and dinners.
I'm sure you read it all before and know exactly what to do so as not to put weight on. To make it happen you have to make a decision that this year will be different. Set yourself a goal to maintain your weight, not lose weight, as that's just impossible!
A few tips:
1. Drink water or have a bowl of vegetable soup before going out: water or a bowl of vegetable soup before going will make you feel fuller and will help you eat less. And if you have some just before going out, you might be able to avoid the apetizers and crisps that will probably be laid out. If it's cold, you might even want to have a bowl of home made vegetable soup. Just don't get to the party starving, as you'll just eat anything and everything.
2. Try and fill up with as many vegetables as possible: vegetables are low in calories, give you lot of vitamins and minerals, and will allow you to eat less of those yummie roast potatoes.
3. Avoid the fried food: avoid the fried food options. Chose the baked or steamed options. They are less fatty and generally contain less calories.
4. Don't take a second serving: You don't need a second serving. Generally what you put on your plate the first time is already too much during the holiday season.
5. For each glass of alcohol you drink, have 2 glasses of water: alcohol is full of empty calories and dehydrates the body. To counteract the dehydration, drink lots of water.
6. Make sure there is fruit for dessert: a healthy dessert is what you need to not snack on sugary desserts and sweets. A nice fruit compote is also an option. Generally doesn't require extra sugar if it's well prepared.
7. Continue your exercise routine, or go for long walks with family and friends: Try as much as possible to squeeze in some physical activity. If time is of essence as you just spend days with family and friends, take everyone out for a long brisk walk, play some outddoor games, or go ice skating.
Don't be ashamed to bring some of your own healthy food if you are afraid there won't be any. Explain to your host what you're trying to achieve. You'll be amazed how people are more receptive to your efforts if you explain why you're doing it.
You might not lose weight over the festive season, but not gaining any weight is a great achievement!
