Set Yourself Targets For Each Workout

01.01.1970 categories:

When I see someone for a consultation, one of the questions I do ask is what they generally do at the gym, or outside, and what they are trying to achieve.

Generally the answer about what they are trying to achieve is quite an easy one: weight loss, toning up, feeling better. But I also generally get the answer that they've been coming to the gym for ages, and haven't seen any change at all. The weight doesn't come off...

The answer to what they are doing is a bit more mixed. Although there is a lot of literature out there, and lots of reading to be done on the internet, lots of people have goals, however, don't know what to do to achieve them.

And it's not just what to do. Yes, people do know they have to do some weight training to tone up. However, I find out that most people quit the second they feel the muscle working, as opposed to continue for a few more reps.
And when people go on the treadmill, they have no goals, except for staying on there for 20 minutes or so.

Next time you train, do set yourself some goals for each training session. If for instance, you walked 2km on the treadmill last time, try and go a little faster and walk further. Or if you can't walk faster, try and walk further by increasing your workout time. Or, increase the incline to make it a uphill walk and a little harder.

The same with weights, don't stop the second it becomes hard. That's exactly the point where the muscle starts to work. Without adding a few reps past the pain point, your muscle can't change.

If you're doing the same workout over and over again, don't expect to see any change, past the initial changes you obviously will have (from doing nothing to something).
For your body to change, it has to be challenged every time.

Preparing a properly periodised programme is what working with a Personal Trainer is all about. Giving you a goal and target for each workout you're doing will guarantee you will achieve your long term goals.

If you haven't seen the results you wanted to see in the past, and need some help with developing a proper programme to reach your specific goals, contact me, Anne Iarchy, Personal Trainer North London and North West London, on 07880627944 or email me at anne@barnetpersonaltrainer.co.uk and book your free consultation now.
