How many times have you heard someone saying that they don't eat anything, and still don't lose weight. Maybe that might even be you ?
People seem very surprise that they don't lose weight when they stop eating. Eventually they become so frustrated, that they just start binging on things, because weight loss doesn't work anyway. And with that, they put on more weight than their starting point.
How is this possible ?
Your body is an intelligent machine. It needs fuel to perform it's basic daily functions. And that goes from things that you are not even aware of, such as making sure the blood goes round your body, oxygen is passed round, your brain is working, etc etc. To all the small things you do on a daily basis, such as taking a shower, brushing your teeth, making a cup of tea, cooking, driving, concentrating, and lots more.
All the above requires your body to be fueled. And the fuel your body uses comes from food.
One person recently asked me why the body couldn't take the fat that's already stored in the body to fuel itself. Since she was overweight, that's how she was hoping to lose weight. Stop eating, and let the body use her overweight.
Unfortunately, the body doesn't work like that. It needs fresh fuel to function, and potentially it can use a little of the stored fat to add on to the food you eat.
If you don't eat any food, your body just slows down. It will stop giving you the energy to perform your daily activities, you will feel tired the whole time. The term for the body is that it goes in "starvation mode". It keeps all energy reserves it has because it knows it won't get any fresh fuel.
In "starvation mode" you can't lose any weight. The body is fighting to keep going and functioning as much as it can.
So not eating is not a solution.
You have to eat regularly, and feed the body to lose weight.
To lose weight, you need to have a deficit of daily and weekly calories. Calories intake needs to be lower than calories output.
Through daily activity and exercise you burn calories, and the total of that, has to be higher than the number of calories you eat.
If you eat healthy and nutritious food on a regular basis, and exercise regularly, only then will your body take some of your stored fat to fuel your activity. And that's how you lose weight.
I remember years ago when I was trying to lose some weight after a stressful period where I wasn't eating properly and not exercising as much as I used to, and I started eating small meals much more regularly. People used to tell me to stop eating so much, as all they saw was me eating regularly. But I can tell you that I did lose quite some weight then.
So start eating regularly and be more active !
